Job Summary: The Design Engineer provides support to Production and Engineering by producing, modifying, and organizing technical drawings and solid models of machinery, tooling, and gauging.

Essential Functions of the Job (listed in order of importance):

1. Provide CAD drawing and solid modeling support to Engineering

a. Work with engineering to take design concepts to working prototypes.

b. Model sub-assemblies and complete machine models to refine machinery construction.

c. Work with the R&D team to perform design changes during the development of new products.

d. Design quality control gauging to allow production employees to maintain quality standards.

e. Work with in-house and outside fabrication and machine shops to manufacture components.

f. Construct solid models from existing drawings and prototyped components.

2. Provide technical support to Production

a. Assess the downstream fitment effects of proposed design changes to machinery and tooling.

b. Consult with the Engineering and Production Departments after modeling the effects of proposed design changes.

c. Monitor and improve the success of implemented machine design changes.

3. Technical Drawing Control

a. Organize drawings in Autodesk Vault to allow those requiring information to easily gain access.

b. Understand and apply tolerance requirements of precision tool and die manufacturing.

c. Develop best practices for technical drawing development, review, approval, and storage.

Skills Required to Perform the Duties of the Job:

  1. Highly skilled with Autodesk Inventor, Autocad Mechanical, and Autodesk Vault.
  2. A demonstrated understanding of manufacturing processes and tolerance capabilities of milling, turning, grinding, lapping, casting, and welding.
  3. A demonstrated understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance standards.
  4. Skilled with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  5. Highly motivated with a commitment to continually driving change and improving workflow and quality.
  6. Knowledge of modern advances in machine tool science and their application.
  7. Able to work in a fast paced environment, meeting deadlines in an accurate and timely manner.
  8. Excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills.

Educational Requirements Needed to Perform the Duties of the Job:

  1. A minimum of an Associates Degree in Engineering, CAD, or related technical field with 8+ years of experience in the design of mechanical systems.
  2. Bachelors Degree in Engineering with 3+ years of experience in design of mechanical systems.

Physical Requirements to Perform the Duties of the Job:

  1. Sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
  2. Close visual work, ability to read fine specifications on technical drawings.

Experience Required to Perform the Duties of the Job:

  1. 8+ years of experience in the design of mechanical systems. Bachelors degree may substitute for 5 years of experience as described in Educational Requirements above.

Licensing or Other Special Certifications Required:

  1. Valid Drivers License with clean driving record.
