General Statement of Duties

An employee in this position will work closely Field Training Lieutenants and Operations Lieutenants and Chiefs to provide the highest, most technologically advanced care and service with skill and compassion to our patients. Emergency Medical Technician will be responsible for the care of their equipment from check out to check-in. Emergency Medical Technician will respond as requested to emergency and non-emergency calls. Emergency Medical Technicians are responsible for patient care and transport. Emergency Medical Technician provides efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured and transports the patient to the appropriate treatment or medical facility. Lastly Emergency Medical Technician will review and sign appropriate documentation concerning their crews care and treatment of their patients.


Examples of Work

Emergency Medical Technician functions within the scope of care as defined by state, regional and local regulatory agencies. Emergency Medical Technician primary role will include but not be limited to the following:

Emergency Vehicles

Determines vehicle readiness

Receives call from the dispatcher, responds verbally to emergency calls, reads maps, may drive an emergency response vehicle to emergency site, uses most expeditious route, and observes traffic ordinances and regulations

Replaces supplies, checks all equipment for future-readiness

Maintain emergency response vehicle in operable condition

Assists in lifting, carrying and properly loading of a patient into the ambulance

Provides Basic Life Support patient care in accordance with established procedures and prescribed local protocols and clinical practices

Provides appropriate overall care in the areas of patient assessment, packaging and transport

Treats patients with appropriate techniques, resources and equipment

Complies with AmeriCare Ambulance safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment

Physical Demands

Aptitudes required for work of this nature are good physical stamina, endurance, and body condition that would not be adversely affected by frequently having to walk, stand, lift, carry, and balance at times, in excess of 150 pounds. Ability to bend, stoop, balance, and crawl on uneven terrain; and the ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud.

Emergency Medical Technician Qualifications


Meets all job requirements of Emergency Medical Technician as defined by state, regional and local regulatory agencies.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification (EMT-B)
  • Valid CPR card
  • CPR card that meets AHA or American Red Cross standards with hands-on Adult, Child, Infant, and AED training
  • Valid Florida drivers license
  • CEVO 4 (Certified Emergency Vehicle Operators Course) Can be obtained within the company
  • Must maintain eligibility as defined by background and drug-free workplace policies


Emergency Medical Technician will also be required to have the following aptitudes for work:

Must gain and maintain knowledge of the geography of AmeriCare Ambulance service areas

Ability to communicate verbally; via telephone and radio equipment or directly and ability to interpret and respond to written, oral and diagnostic form instructions

Must have the ability to read road maps and GPS system; Must be able to drive and accurately discern street signs and address

Ability to communicate verbally with patients and significant others in diverse cultural and age groups to interview patients, family members, and bystanders.

Ability to bend, stoop, balance, and crawl on uneven terrain; and the ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture

Must have knowledge and skills relevant to the position and be able to implement them in stressful situations

Must be cognizant of all legal, ethical, and moral obligations inherent within scope of practice

Must gain and maintain knowledge of the AmeriCare policies and procedures

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and the general public
