General Statement of Duties

The Paramedic must be a confident leader who can accept the challenge and high degree of responsibility entailed in the position. The Paramedic must have excellent judgment and be able to prioritize decisions and act quickly in the best interest of the patient, must be self-disciplined, able to develop patient rapport, interview hostile patients, maintain a safe distance, and recognize and utilize communication unique to diverse multicultural groups and ages within those groups. Must be able to function independently at an optimum level in a non-structured environment that is constantly changing.

Physical Demands

Aptitudes required for work of this nature are good physical stamina, endurance, and body condition that would not be adversely affected by frequently having to walk, stand, lift, carry, and balance at times, in excess of 150 pounds. Ability to bend, stoop, balance, and crawl on uneven terrain; and the ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud.

Paramedic Qualifications


Meets all job requirements, Paramedic, as defined by state, regional and local regulatory agencies.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Florida Paramedic Certification (EMT-P)
  • Current ACLS provider certification
  • Valid Florida drivers license
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Card (PALS)
  • CEVO 4 (Certified Emergency Vehicle Operators Course) Can be obtained within the company
  • Must maintain eligibility as defined by background and drug-free workplace policies


Paramedic will also be required to have the following aptitudes for work:

  • Must gain and maintain knowledge of the geography of AmeriCare Ambulance service areas
  • Ability to communicate verbally; via telephone and radio equipment or directly and ability to interpret and respond to written, oral and diagnostic form instructions
  • Must have the ability to read road maps and GPS system; Must be able to drive and accurately discern street signs and address
  • Ability to communicate verbally with patients and significant others in diverse cultural and age groups to interview patients, family members, and bystanders.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, balance, and crawl on uneven terrain; and the ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture
  • Must have knowledge and skills relevant to the position and be able to implement them in stressful situations
  • Must be cognizant of all legal, ethical, and moral obligations inherent within scope of practice
  • Must gain and maintain knowledge of the AmeriCare policies and procedures
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and the general public


Examples of Work

Paramedic functions within the scope of care as defined by state, regional and local regulatory agencies. Paramedic primary role will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Emergency Vehicles
  • Determines vehicle readiness
  • Receives call from the dispatcher, responds verbally to emergency calls, reads maps, may drive an emergency response vehicle to emergency site, uses most expeditious route, and observes traffic ordinances and regulations
  • Replaces supplies, checks all equipment for future-readiness
  • Maintain emergency response vehicle in operable condition
  • Assists in lifting, carrying and properly loading of the patient into the ambulance
  • Provides Advanced Life Support patient care in accordance with established procedures and prescribed local protocols and clinical practices
  • Provides appropriate overall care in the areas of patient assessment, packaging and transport
  • Treats patients with appropriate techniques, resources and equipment
  • Evaluates and delegates any or all tasks performed by a lower level EMT
  • Complies with AmeriCare Ambulance safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment
  • Treats patients with appropriate techniques, resources and equipment
  • Paramedic is personally responsible, legally, ethically and morally for each drug administered, for using correct precautions and techniques, observing and documenting the effects of the drugs administered
  • Provides appropriate overall care in the areas of patient assessment, packaging and transport
