Job summary

This position maintains data streams and data support systems, leads project management and field research programs, helps write and produce scientific publications, and develops and implements research analyses within the Conservation Research department, focusing on elasmobranchs.

Core Responsibilities

  • Responsible for database maintenance and organization; data acquisition, curation, and analysis; and developing analytical tools and models
  • Oversee and coordinate field activities, data collection, equipment inventory and maintenance
  • Lead the execution of scientific manuscript writing, contribute as a co-author to additional projects
  • Assist with, and also lead project management; such activities may include general program support and administration, as well as, supervision of student, citizen science, and volunteer researchers
  • As needed, communicates results at scientific convenings, conferences, management agencies, external stakeholders, and public audiences

 

Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • Sc. or Ph.D. in population biology, ecology, climate, biodiversity, fisheries science, or related fields with experience applied to marine science
  • Demonstrated proficiency in numerical modeling and scientific computing; preferably with proficiency in the R, Python, Igor, and/or Matlab
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience and applied use of biotelemetry data and population estimation methods
  • Proficiency in quantitative fishery science, statistics, parameter estimation or data assimilation techniques, and Bayesian approaches
  • Familiarity and experience with marine and boat operations and strong aptitude in coordinating and conducting field logistics in challenging ocean conditions
  • Ability to work within, and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium's Core Values
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and maintain clearance in the DMV Pull Program
