Job Description:

The Senior Director, Alliance Management is responsible for the effective management of specific collaborations to achieve the strategic objectives of creating transformative medicines by optimizing our relationships and resolving issues to minimize risks. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of drug discovery, development and commercialization to facilitate discussions and issue resolution between Vertex and our partners with the goal of delivering value to both parties. The candidate will report to the Vice President, Alliance Management.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Building strong relationships internally and externally with all key stakeholders in the collaboration, and help connect Vertex stakeholders with partners through relationship mapping.
  • Partner with steering committee members involved in collaborations to resolve issues and help imbed partnering best practices within our collaboration teams
  • Independently launch and manage strategic and complex collaborations
  • Proactively monitor all aspects of the partnership and identify potential issues and possible solutions; gaining internal alignment and taking accountability for closure
  • Manage dispute resolution and engage internal and external decision makers
  • Manage collaborations consistent with the contract and governance structure; in a manner that will maximize value including organizing and facilitating all governance meetings (e.g. joint steering committees)
  • Together with BD Transactions, renegotiate any necessary amendments
  • Monitor the health and effectiveness of the partnership.
  • Help build a partner focused collaborative culture for the teams and functional managers involved in collaborations
  • Support the smooth transition from the deal signing to launch in an effective manner including forward integration during negotiations
  • Understand project/partnership details to manage day to day issues arising from the collaboration
  • Deliver alliance capability training to associates working on collaborations

  • Demonstrated relationship management and negotiation skills
  • Capable and comfortable managing shifting priorities in a rapidly changing environment

Qualification:

  • Bachelor degree required
  • MBA and/or PhD or equivalent experiences a plus
  • 10 years' experience in the pharmaceutical industry with first-hand experience in the management or working within research, development or commercial alliances or management of development stage programs
  • Prior experience in new product planning is a plus
